Problem Statement
The client set out to build an innovative mug holder with a foldable screen that wirelessly projects a smartphone’s display, for an interactive experience while drinking. Requirements included a spill-resistant foldable display, an ergonomic design that fit any standard mug, Wi-Fi connectivity for seamless streaming, and a portable battery with 2+ hours of backup.
Solution
Techshlok began with an in-depth feasibility study to confirm the project could be executed within the client’s technical and budget constraints. The core challenge was integrating a foldable display into a durable, compact design able to withstand physical and environmental stress — spills and heat included.
Phase 1: Research & Feasibility Study
- Foldable display research — the team explored available foldable screen technologies, working with global vendors to find options that could withstand daily use, including potential liquid exposure.
- Processor and connectivity validation — since wireless content casting from smartphones was a core feature, the team validated processor options and selected a Linux-based processor supporting wireless casting through proprietary scripts, compatible with both Android and iOS.
- Design conceptualization — the team designed a holder that comfortably fit standard mugs, accommodated the foldable screen, and housed the Wi-Fi and battery modules.
Phase 2: Prototype Development

- Screen integration and processor setup — a wireless casting system let users project a smartphone screen onto the foldable display; HDMI screens simulated Android/iOS casting before the actual foldable panel was sourced.
- Battery-powered operation — a compact battery pack was selected and optimized for two hours of wireless operation, with circuit refinements and connector reduction to minimize power draw.
- Thermal management and design refinement — 3D-printed SLA prototyping allowed rapid iteration on the mug holder design, with an integrated heat sink to manage temperature from the processor and battery.
Phase 3: Testing and Client Delivery

Comprehensive testing covered performance (lag-free streaming), battery life (2+ hours on a single charge), thermal efficiency, usability across 8–10 mug sizes, and waterproofing under simulated spills. A video demonstration was sent to the client showing the device in use — drinking from the mug while casting content to the foldable screen — followed by minor aesthetic refinements. The prototype was finalized and delivered within 2–3 months.
Result
The Smart Mug met the client’s vision and technical requirements, demonstrating Techshlok’s ability to merge foldable displays, wireless content casting, and battery-powered operation into a functional, durable product.
