Turning a Manual Flour Mill Into a Cloud-Connected Smart Appliance

A health-focused home appliance startup envisioned Homa, an IoT-enabled smart flour mill designed to encourage healthy living by promoting freshly ground flour at home. Beyond simple milling, Homa records operational metrics, rewards user engagement, and integrates with a connected mobile app to create a smart kitchen experience.

Problem Statement

The client came to Techshlok with a manually operated, pre-built flour mill and a vision to turn it into a cloud-connected, production-ready smart device — monitoring usage data such as run-time, current consumption, and flour output, relaying it to a cloud server, and rewarding users with redeemable loyalty points via the app. The challenge was building a scalable, production-ready IoT device with robust electronics, real-time data communication, and seamless integration with the client’s app ecosystem.

Solution

Techshlok delivered a complete electronic transformation — hardware, firmware, and system architecture — to make the mill intelligent, responsive, and cloud-connected. The result was a single-PCB IoT solution capable of smart sensing, secure communication, and multi-interface control, built for manufacturability at scale.

Electronics & Embedded System Design

A controller capable of handling real-time communication and control was selected, and a single-sided PCB was designed to minimize cost and simplify fabrication — handling power to the motor and feeder, and interfacing with input controls and sensors. Analog protection circuits, AC noise-suppression filters (varistors and inductors), and real-time current-sensing circuits were integrated to handle input irregularities and monitor machine load.

Communication & Protocol Stack

MQTT was implemented for lightweight, reliable device-to-cloud and cloud-to-device messaging, enabling real-time remote control, mode selection (wheat, millet, corn), and features like AutoClean, AutoCut, and timer-based grinding. With thousands of devices expected to run concurrently, a unique device-ID schema and secure message-queueing mechanism were designed to prevent collisions on the broker server.

Multimodal Control Interfaces

The machine can be operated via physical buttons, a touch display, or the mobile app over Wi-Fi provisioning. An embedded RTOS handles fault detection and error handling, prioritized task execution (such as stopping the motor if grain runs out), and event queuing with state recovery.

App Collaboration & System Architecture

Techshlok worked closely with the client’s app team to define the IoT stack and architecture, implement Wi-Fi provisioning for onboarding new devices, sync operational data to user accounts, set up reward-points calculation based on usage, and enable audio feedback and voice alerts.

Audio System & Flash Memory Handling

Audio playback support (alert tones, mode confirmation) was embedded, with firmware variations including multiple buzzer tones, music files, and flashable firmware builds with programming guides.

Testing, Debugging & Mass Production Support

Techshlok supported the client through field testing and validation — resolving inconsistent audio playback across hardware units, mobile app-to-device synchronization bugs, and faulty provisioning under certain network conditions — and provided detailed testing documentation, fabrication files, and bulk firmware-flashing instructions.
