Installation Location:  Google HQ, California

Problem Statement

To develop innovative electronics and interactive mechanisms for an art installation in collaboration with global artist Shilo Shiv Suleman. She envisioned a "breathing tree" installation, featuring LEDs wrapped around it that would sync with the breathing patterns of the person sitting beneath it.

Solution

Techshlok’s expert team developed a cutting-edge system using sensor fusion technology to remotely measure the user's breath rate. The system used this data to trigger responsive animations in the flowers and stem of the tree, creating a unique interactive experience.

Approach

  • Dividing different sections:  The entire project was segmented into several smaller projects for better focus and management. Key aspects like power supply, breath rate detection, LED drivers, and project planning for easy future installation and replicability by non-technical users were tackled separately.
  • Handling unknowns: A major challenge was detecting breath rate remotely. Given COVID-19 restrictions, no physical contact with the user was allowed. After extensive research, the team developed a solution using an RGB camera and thermal camera to detect the warm air exhaled from the nostrils. Alternative detection methods, such as using microphones to detect breath sounds, were also explored but could not be used due to compliance with Google's guidelines.
  • Testing: The prototype underwent rigorous testing over a six-month period, including installation at Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, to simulate real-world conditions. Multiple environmental factors were analyzed to fine-tune the system's breath detection capabilities. The modular design ensured ease of future component replacement and enhanced the longevity of the installation.

Results
The art installation was successfully completed on time, meeting both functional and aesthetic goals. The installation accurately detected the user’s breath rate and activated the LED display accordingly, creating an immersive, interactive experience. The client expressed high satisfaction with the unique and innovative outcome of the project, which is now a part of the permanent collection at a prominent art center.

Business Value

Techshlok delivered a groundbreaking interactive art installation within 9 months, fulfilling the client's vision. The project, combining advanced sensor fusion technology and creative design, was completed on time and within budget, earning positive feedback from both the client and visitors. The "breathing tree" installation is a prime example of Techshlok’s ability to combine art and technology seamlessly, offering a unique interactive experience that is both functional and visually stunning.
